On a side note I have had the pleasure of attending several events hosted by local village volunteer fire services or hasici as they are known. It is important to know that very rarely are they actually called upon to do any fire fighting and that the organisation is more of a social club than any thing else. Without fail every hasici organised event I attend be it in Spy or Lipi I am reminded of Milos Forman's 1967 classic 'The Firemen's Ball which if you haven;t seen it and would like to have some understanding of rural Czech life I readily recommend it to you.
Back to the night in hand, the bonfire was very reminiscent of the Guy Fawkes celebrations in England except they substitute the Guy for a witch, which is incinerated to the sound clinking glasses, laughing children dressed as witches and general merriment. It was really a fulfilled and most entertaining evening enjoyed by all especially as the following day was May Day and a national holiday.
